You can start preparing from around the 30th week of pregnancy. At this point, you will probably already know whether your baby will be a boy or a girl – if you want to know the sex of your baby in advance. You can take it easy when it comes to choosing your baby’s first outfit, because there are also things that you can only have given to you at the time of birth – for example, a diaper bag. The most important things for the beginning are of course diapers and clothes. When it comes to clothes, of course you have to consider whether your baby will be born in summer or winter. When it comes to colors, you don’t necessarily have to stick to the classic blue for boys or pink for girls. You can of course also go for neutral colors like beige or yellow. This is especially true if you don’t want to know the sex of your baby until it is born. Neutral colors also have the advantage that you can store the clothes in case a sibling should follow.

How much does a first set for the baby cost?

The cost of initial equipment for a baby varies greatly and also depends to a large extent on personal circumstances. In general, it can be said that a first set can cost between 500 and several thousand euros. Many things you could also buy used in a good condition. The market for this is large, both on the Internet and on the flea market or in second-hand stores you can buy a large part of the initial equipment. For new things, such as a changing unit or baby crib, the prices vary greatly, but it is possible to buy such things cheaply. There is also the possibility to get some things as a gift from family and friends, this applies especially to the initial equipment in terms of clothing and accessories. To do this, you can make a list from which everyone can choose something to give you for the birth.

Financial aid for the initial equipment

Pregnant women who have a low income can apply for financial assistance for the initial equipment. If you receive social assistance or unemployment benefit, you can receive one-time benefits from the job center for the initial equipment. You should apply as soon as possible, as it takes some time to process the application. This gives you enough time after the benefits have been approved to purchase the initial equipment. However, an application can only be submitted from the 13th week of pregnancy. If you have a low income but are not entitled to social benefits, you can also apply for initial equipment allowance at a family assistance center.
